In January 2020, the President of the Multilateral Chamber of Commerce and Cooperation Israel Ibero-America (now the Israel Ibero-America Chamber of Commerce), David O. Abraham, was invited to take part in the 2020 High-Level Round Table, organized by the Interparliamentary Coalition for Global Ethics and the Peace Secretariat of the Government of the Republic of Guatemala. During this visit to the United Nations, the Chamber’s President presented the role of corporate responsibility in promoting a culture of peace.
Corporate responsibility and the culture of peace in the 2030 Agenda
During the meeting, the Chamber’s President stressed the importance of promoting the concept of corporate responsibility so that the business sector can contribute to and invest in promoting a culture of peace and achieving the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015. It sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), covering areas such as the eradication of poverty, the reduction of inequalities, climate action and peace, among others.
On this visit, David O. Abraham was accompanied by Mr. Carlos Sanz, Director General of the Chamber’s headquarters in the United States.
The Interparliamentary Coalition for Global Ethics initiative
The Sustainable Development Goals encompass the ethics inherent in many cultures and religions on issues of social and environmental justice. In this context, the Interparliamentary Coalition for Global Ethics (IPCGE) is launching a major initiative to create a global steering committee of parliamentarians, religious leaders, business leaders and educational and cultural representatives.
This committee is called upon to lead efforts that promote cultural, religious and business ethics, in order to advance legislation and social action that implement these goals, as a follow-up to the goals of the 2016 High-Level Panel and the 2018 Parliamentarians’ Summit.
