On Thursday, January 28, 2021, regional director Matty Zwaig gave a lecture via Zoom on “The Abraham Accords” and their prospects for multilateral trade with Ibero-America. The lecture was an initiative of the Multilateral Chamber of Commerce and Cooperation Israel Ibero-America (now the Israel Ibero-America Chamber of Commerce).
What are the Abraham Accords?
The Abraham Accords are the agreements normalizing diplomatic relations signed by Israel with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain on September 15, 2020, in Washington, with the mediation of the United States. Subsequently, other countries, such as Morocco, announced normalization agreements with Israel.
Cooperation between Israel and the United Arab Emirates
The presentation focused on the impact of the synergies between the State of Israel and the United Arab Emirates and on the development of the various areas that make up their relationship:
- finance and investment;
- civil aviation;
- innovation;
- healthcare;
- tourism, culture and sports;
- energy and the environment;
- telecommunications;
- agriculture;
- security.
Zwaig also highlighted the wide range of new possibilities opening up for cooperation between the two countries.
Prospects for multilateral trade with Ibero-America
With several announcements already made, additional bilateral agreements under way and others expected to follow in the coming months, Zwaig explained that the international market was awaiting more information on the two countries’ combined strategy for developing their relations, both at the political level and across the full range of business sectors.
Added to this is the hope that these positive changes will soon spread throughout the Middle East and beyond: to their relations with Latin America and to the possibility of using both countries’ infrastructure for business triangulation, the trading of goods, investments and joint ventures with other countries.
Triangulation between Ibero-America, Israel and the UAE
Specifically, the speaker pointed to the possibility of triangulation between Ibero-America, Israel and the UAE in technology, in the property sector (real estate), in joint efforts to combat desertification and, in short, in everything that the fruits of peace represent, something longed for over so many years.
The event had a strong impact in the media and on social networks and has been viewed by thousands of people.
