San José, Costa Rica. Paul Stephen, regional director in Costa Rica of the Multilateral Chamber of Commerce and Cooperation Israel Ibero-America (now the Israel Ibero-America Chamber of Commerce), attended in November 2023 the 37th Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education of the CECC/SICA. There he presented the proposal for the Single-Teacher Schools Strengthening Program that CILIB is developing for the Central American region.
What is the CECC/SICA
The Central American Educational and Cultural Coordination (CECC/SICA) is the body of the Central American Integration System (SICA) specialized in education and culture. Its Council of Ministers of Education brings together the education authorities of the member countries.
Single-Teacher Schools Strengthening Program in Central America
Single-teacher schools are schools in which a single teacher serves students from several grades, a common model in rural areas. During his presentation, Stephen highlighted the importance of supporting them because of the role they play in rural education in the region.
The proposal seeks to implement strategies that improve the quality of education and provide the resources needed to enhance learning in these institutions. In addition, topics essential to the comprehensive development of students were addressed:
- teacher training;
- the use of technology in the classroom.
Interest from SICA Ministers of Education
The Ministers of Education present showed great interest in the proposal and discussed opportunities for collaboration among SICA member countries to strengthen education in rural areas. Stephen stressed that the success of the program depends on joint work between CILIB, Governments and local communities.
This participation reinforces CILIB’s commitment to education and sustainable development in Central America, and to investing in the future of the region’s young people.
